Best place to stay in Fes near the Medina.
Riad Layalina was our favourite riad in Morocco. We stayed a total of 3 nights. What impressed us most was the warmth and hospitality of Muhammad, who, instantly made us feel welcome. We were welcomed with a complimentary, delicious tagine and bowl of fresh fruit. Our breakfasts everyday were extraordinary, compared to other riads. Muhammad was so thoughtful and caring – running after us to offer an umbrella before we ventured out in the rain. We visited Morocco during the winter, our room’s heater was turned on before we entered. We loved waking up to such a gorgeous view. Thank you Muhammad for a wonderful stay.
Riad Layalina is an amazing place to stay; very good located at the old medina, charming building and rooms, nicely decorated, an excellent service by the most friendly and helpfull staff, great food (nice breakfast and the best evening meal we had in Fez), lovely places to relax at the cosy rooftop terrace or downstairs by the pool. We were fortunate to get an upgrade to the suite the last 2 nights of our 7 days stay.
It was very close to all the attractions without the noise of being in the Médina. The hosts are excellent and gave very good tips on attractions, restaurants etc. They also provided a substantial breakfast every morning. We will definitely return to Cafe Layalina on our next trip to Fes.
We spent two days at the Riad, and would have happily stayed longer. When my husband and I arrived with our daughter by car, one of the hosts came out to guide us into the parking area. During check-in, we were warmly greeted and treated to mint tea and scrumptious pastries before being escorted to our rooms. Our room was spacious, with a very comfortable king-size bed, and a huge private bathroom. Our daughter’s was also lovely, with plenty of room for one person. We spent a considerable amount of time the first afternoon on the terrace, where the views of the city were breathtaking. It’s so close to the Medina, but very quiet with little street noise. We opted to eat dinner there rather than look for somewhere else, and that was a brilliant idea. The meal was delicious, with a wonderful eggplant salad, lots of vegetables, and a lamb tagine that was melt-in-your-mouth and so tender. The second night we had an equally wonderful chicken couscous. Breakfasts were also fabulous, with fresh squeezed orange juice, great coffee, eggs, pastries, pancakes and fruit. There was so much food that we were set for the day.
The building itself is gorgeous, with inlaid tile, mosaics and beautifully carved woodwork and wrought iron. The courtyard was very peaceful, with the pool and an orange tree. The area where we had our meals was very comfortable, with long sofas and padded seats. When it was lit up at night with multi-colored lights, it was spectacular.
All of the staff were warm and friendly, and made every effort to make sure all of our needs were met. We would definitely stay there again.
We only got to stay here one night and wished we could have stayed longer.
Emails beforehand with Jerome were answered immediately and he was very accommodating with our inquiries changes in plans.
We were immediately welcomed and made to feel at home by Bilal and his team who served us delicious mint tea, tajine, fruit salad and bread, which was much appreciated after a long day of travelling.
The whole place exuded the beautiful Moroccan culture and each room was clean and decorated with authenticity. The steep narrow stairs to rooms might present a challenge to those less physically able. It was very quiet despite being so close to the medina.
Only steps to the medina, we were able to find our way without a guide as Bilal provided us with a map and instructions to and from the Riad. He even made sure our breakfast the next morning was ready early as we had to depart by 8 a.m. He was an excellent host and we will be back on our next trip to Fes!
We only stayed one night but our observation was that the riad was authentic and nice.
The staff were very accommodating. We arrived late and departed early but the dinner was held for us and a packed breakfast was provided to us when we left the next day.
My daughter also left her precious teddy bear behind and the riad helped us get it back by posting the teddy to our next destination. This was much appreciated.
We arrived at Fez from Casablanca-flew in from JFK -NYC. We were warmly welcomed by Bilal and Tafik-(hey are hosts) who served us hot moroccan mint tea -and then gave us a tour of the Riad and showed us the view from the top. The views of the old city and ramparts from the roof top are fabulous. They showed us a map, pointed directions and what to do etc. We had 2 rooms as the suites were taken and it worked out well for us. We walked to the Medina and all the shops –and slept great. We went down for breakfast which was wonderful, fresh, hot and tasty. They really go out of the way to make you feel great. We had a tour of Volublis planned through them and we added a tour of the Atlas mountains. On the way we stopped at Meknes and picked up a lot of olives -they are excellent. We stayed here 2 nights and then went back to Casablanca. The parking is close by and pickups and drop offs are from the road which is the back door to the Riad. Excellent choice, the reviews about this place were all true. You will be pleased if you choose this place. We do plan to return someday. Jerome is the owner and does manage to keep his staff and place running great! Do come here for a cultural experience not a hotel stay –this is not like staying in a hotel room but the advantages do make up for more! Wish you guys took cards and not just cash-the exchange from Dollars to Euros to MCD leave you spinning and you lose money both ways –not the hotels problem –cards would make this a better experience.
Great service, the food is delicious and the entire place us beautifully decorated. Highly recommended.
This is a lovely riad on the edge of the Medina with the most attentive hosts. Jerome and everyone working here made our stay extra special. From the thorough orientation upon arrival, to the tea and snacks we enjoyed every afternoon sitting in the rooftop terrace, everyone here seemed to genuinely want to make our stay the best experience possible. I was also impressed with how the staff quickly and diplomatically dealt with a difficult situation involving another guest.
